1. General information
The subject has three goals:
1º To analyze the mechanisms that convey the different social policies and their consequences with respect to inequality. 2º Identify the mechanisms of action and modes of provision of the social welfare subsystems and evaluate the conflicts and limitations of these.
3º To value the existing articulation between market, society and State in the design of policies.
The subject is aligned with the 2030 Agenda. Specifically with the Sustainable Development Goals: gender equality, reducing inequalities, sustainable cities and communities and Peace, justice and strong institutions.
The acquisition of the learning results of the subject provides training and competence to contribute to the 2030 Agenda.
2. Learning results
Upon completion of the subject, the student will be able to:
1. Establish professional relationships in order to identify the most appropriate form of intervention
2. Assess the needs and possible options to guide an intervention strategy
3. Work with and assess the needs and circumstances of individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities. Helping to make informed decisions about their resources, through the different areas of activity of the social welfare subsystems.
They also help you to develop other personal competencies oriented to:
- Develop the ability to relate concepts
- Develop the ability to work both individually and in teams
- Develop expository and synthesis skills.
In addition, students must demonstrate achievement of the following results:
1. Knows and understands the purpose and mechanisms of action and modes of provision of the social welfare subsystems (health, education, guaranteed income, housing, etc.) in Spain and Europe, as well as their general structure, their organisation and their main services and benefits at the state and autonomous community levels.
2. It is able to identify the conflicts and limitations of these subsystems in relation to populations in difficulty, as well as their compensatory devices.
3. It is able to detect the mechanisms of exclusion and discrimination in access to social protection, and to propose formulas to correct them.
4. Knows and understands the purpose and mechanisms of development cooperation.
3. Syllabus
Part I. Introduction to Social Welfare Systems: consists of a thematic unit entitled "Social Policy and Systems of welfare". This first part will be carried out in the first week of the term.
Part II. The social welfare subsystems in Spain: consists of six thematic units, being: 1º Education system, 2º Health system, 3º Income guarantee system, 4º Employment system, 5º Housing system, 6º Social services system . This part is the core of the course and each subject will have two weeks in the subject program.
Part III. Social welfare models in Western societies: consists of a thematic unit entitled "The social welfare systems in Western societies". This part has one week in the subject calendar.
Part IV. Development cooperation and social welfare: consists of a topic entitled "Mechanisms of action of the cooperation and social welfare". This part has one week in the subject calendar.
4. Academic activities

Assessment tests. 5 hours
5. Assessment system
The overall assessment will consist of the following tests:
Two intermediate tests (50% of the grade): These tests will be written assignments and individual theoretical and practical tests.
Group practical work (50% of the grade): These works will be the product of the practices carried out during the four-month period.
The subject will be satisfactorily assessed if it is passed with an average grade of 5 out of 10.
Mere attendance will not be evaluated, nor the simple presentation of assignments, nor the effort invested, but the degree of achievement reached, on the basis of the following criteria:

The ability to synthesize and relate

Writing and spelling (good use of these may result in an increase of up to 1 point in the grade, bad use: spelling mistakes, defective writing may result in a one-point drop in the grade)

There is the possibility of individual assignments if communicated by email at the beginning of the term.
